A long time ago, in a completely different galaxy far, far away … Disney announced Thursday that it plans to release a brand-new Star Wars trilogy once the current saga wraps up — which will have different characters, but still keep the signature crawl. While there is no release date set, the movies will likely come out sometime after 2020, seeing as how Episode IX is expected to hit theaters on Dec. 20, 2019. They will be helmed by Rian Johnson, director of Episode VIII, “The Last Jedi.” “Lucasfilm is excited to announce that Johnson will create a brand-new Star Wars trilogy, the first of which he is also set to write and direct, with longtime collaborator Ram Bergman onboard to produce,” Disney wrote in a statement. “As writer-director of ‘The Last Jedi,’ Johnson conceived and realized a powerful film of which Lucasfilm and Disney are immensely proud,” it said. “In shepherding this new trilogy, which is separate from the episodic Skywalker saga, Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.” In addition to the trilogy, Lucasfilm is planning on rolling out a live-action “Star Wars” TV series — which is being developed for Disney’s new, yet-to-be-released streaming service.
