'Fixer Upper's' Chip and Joanna Gaines on the show's end: It's 'time to catch our breath'

Friday, 13 October 2017, 08:19:29 PM. Chip and Joanna Gaines, the husband and wife hosts of HGTV's 'Fixer Upper' wanted to 'take a step back.'

Home renovation television stars Chip and Joanna Gaines are revealing why they've pulled the plug on Fixer Upper.

The spouses announced their HGTV series that premiered in 2013 would end after its fifth season on their website last month. In the blog post, the Gaines wrote that though they were "confident" in their decision it was not an easy one to make.

"Our family has grown up alongside yours, and we have felt you rooting us on from the other side of the screen," the pair who reside in Texas said at the time. "How bittersweet to say goodbye to the very thing that introduced us all in the first place."

Now, shedding light on their choice, Chip and Joanna spoke candidly about their motivation in an interview with People magazine published Wednesday.

"We gave everything we had to this show — the beautiful homes and those sweet families — but this just felt like the right time to catch our breath for a bit,” Joanna said.

Chip said filming the series, which People reported took 11 months, began to take its toll.

“Nobody told us that that was unique,” Chip commented of the production schedule. “Nobody told us that that was a little bit irrational.”

Chip shared that the production schedule also weighed on their four children Drake, Ella, Duke, and Emmie Kay, as well.

“They would ask, ‘Mom and Dad, do you guys have to film again today? When is this going to be over?” added Chip.

In addition to Fixer Upper, the couple's obligations pile high on their plates. They have the Magnolia Market at the Silos which offers guests an opportunity to shop, play games and eat, in addition to a real estate business, The Magnolia Journal magazine, and a home decor line with Target debuting Nov. 5, among other projects. When telling fans of Fixer Upper's end, the pair also mentioned a spinoff titled Behind the Design, which will explore how Joanna creates the vision for homes they have renovated.

Currently, the Gaines are excited to be able to devote more time to their family and other projects.

“We really want to focus on this break and take a step back to let this all soak in,” Joanna explained. “Regardless of what the future holds, we are hopeful for what God has for us and our family in this next season.”
