Lidl halts construction on another Charlotte-area grocery store

The German grocer Lidl has halted construction on another Charlotte-area grocery store.

A parcel of land on Williamson Road in Mooresville was rezoned for a 36,170-square foot grocery store in 2015. Work had begun to clear the land, but it has since stopped, the Mooresville Tribune reported last week.

The grocer said in an email to the town it has “decided to (temporarily) suspend the construction progress on the Mooresville project,” according to the paper.

That seems to be the case, too, with a site in Charlotte’s South End.

Records show Lidl bought the property at 3229 South Blvd. for $4.9 million in January 2016. Since then, buildings were cleared, but progress on the site slowed in recent months, and the property has become overgrown. Lidl won’t say what’s going on with the project.

“We have a number of sites in various stages of development across the state. However, we are not addressing individual specifics outside the regular course of our store announcements at this time,” a company representative told the Observer in an email.

Lidl (pronounced “Lee-dull,” like “needle”) still has other stores under construction throughout the region, including in Huntersville and other markets.

Lidl entered the U.S. market this summer with stores in the Carolinas and Virginia, including in nearby Lancaster County, S.C. The company says it will open up to 100 stores throughout the East Coast by the end of the year. Since June, the grocer has opened 14 stores in North Carolina, the spokesman said. Another two, in Raleigh and in Winston-Salem, are opening next week, according to local reports.

Lidl offers some of the cheapest groceries in the region, with prices comparable to another low-cost European chain, Aldi.
