Onetime haunt of Carole Lombard and Clark Gable sells in Hollywood

Tuesday, 05 December 2017, 01:47:49 AM. The 1920s Tuscan-style house, which looks like a miniature castle, went for $1.7 million.

Described in the listing as Tuscan, this Hollywood house looks for all the world like a castle — which seems fitting since such Hollywood royalty as Carole Lombard and Clark Gable were among the previous occupants.

Designed and built in 1924 by Los Angeles architect A.B. Crist, the 3,693-square-foot mini-palace recently sold for $1.7 million. The previous owner purchased the history-rich home in 1983 for $180,000.

The house contains 12 rooms and several porches. The three fireplaces are adorned with ornate hearths. The library is paneled in redwood. A barrel-vault ceiling tops the living room and continues to the music room. There are oak floors throughout and some original light fixtures from the 1920s.

The bathrooms are tiled in ceramic and marble; there are a total of four bathrooms and four bedrooms.

Comic actress Lombard, who died in a 1942 plane crash at 33, appeared in several films with Gable including “No Man of Her Own” (1932) and “In Name Only” (1939).

Gable, who died in 1960 at 59, was known for his leading-man roles including playing Rhett Butler in “Gone With the Wind” (1939).

Oscar Varela of Keller Williams handled the transaction.
