Portillo's rolls out delivery in most markets with DoorDash partnership

Wednesday, 15 November 2017, 06:38:46 AM. Portillo's now delivering its Italian beef, Chicago dogs and cake shakes to homes in all markets.

In potentially troubling news for bulging waistlines across the land, Portillo’s has expanded delivery in nearly all of its markets nationwide in a new partnership with DoorDash, a San Francisco-based delivery service.

The Oak Brook-based chain known for food like Italian beef, Chicago dogs and chocolate cake shakes is just the latest restaurant to invest in delivery to meet growing demand, particularly among millennial consumers. Astute Portillo’s customers may have noticed the chain quietly ramping up the DoorDash delivery option in recent weeks, working out the kinks before making it official this week. The service is now available in most of the Chicago area, CEO Keith Kinsey said.

“Some people beat us (to delivery), but we’re doing it at the right time and we believe we’re doing it the right way,” Kinsey said. “The biggest thing is we’re delivering quality food.”

Earlier this year, Portillo’s announced it would test delivery from its River North location in a partnership with GrubHub. But Kinsey said DoorDash offered better geographical coverage for Portillo’s national rollout and added 13 new cities to its service in order to fulfill Portillo’s orders.

As of now, delivery is not yet available in Rockford, Normal, and Merrillville, Ind., though Kinsey said it will be next year.

Customers can order for delivery through the Portillo’s website or app, which allows for preferences — including ketchup on hot dogs for children and out-of-towners — and tracks the progress of the driver. There’s a $5 fee on all delivery orders, which must be a minimum of $15. Tipping delivery drivers is recommended. Orders can also be placed through the DoorDash website or app.

While still a relatively tiny portion of the restaurant business at about 3 percent of all visits, delivery is also the fastest growing channel for restaurant traffic, according to research from the NPD Group, a research and consulting firm. Delivery represented 1.8 billion visits for the 12-month period ending in September, up 3 percent from the same period last year.
