"Footloose," a presentation by the Ridgewood High School Drama Club and Thespian Troupe 6662, is the autumn production in Norridge at Ridgewood High School.

"Last year, we successfully produced two musicals, so we wanted to continue that success by producing a musical we thought would be familiar to our community," said Jim Smith, director and technical director. "We wanted to offer an opportunity to our students to work on a dance-heavy musical. We have a younger cast than we've had in the past couple of years, and we're hopeful that 'Footloose' will provide the groundwork for us to produce even bigger musicals in the years ahead."

"Footloose" is staged at Ridgewood High School in Norridge (7500 W. Montrose Ave.) on Nov. 16, 17 and 18 at 7 p.m. in the school's auditorium. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students or seniors. Get tickets at or call 708-697-5506.

Last autumn's production of "Grease" had, "its rebellious teenagers," Smith said, who added that "Footloose" is "actually a much different production."

"What's forgotten sometimes is that the musical is about surviving a loss," Smith said.

The storyline of "Footloose" includes a ban on dancing in a small town after an accidental motor vehicle death of teens following a night of revelry, he said. But a halt on dancing in lieu of celebrating life cannot be sustained as a permanent outcome to mourning, Smith said.

When a newcomer arrives in town, a rebel named Ren, the status quo is challenged because Ren wants to express himself through dance. Dance, "is one of humanity's greatest gifts," Smith said, rounding out, "human expression, both joy and pain, through movement."

Danny Ludston, a sophomore from Harwood Heights, plays Ren McCormack.

"He's not trying to find trouble," Ludston said. "Trouble finds him."

Ludston, of his lead role, said, "It's exciting; it's thrilling. I've been a fan of 'Footloose' my whole life."

"Footloose" was a movie featuring , released in 1984. Another "Footloose" movie came out in 2011.

Despite the tragic circumstances in the script, "it's about healing," said Audrey Majer, a senior from Norridge who plays Lulu.

"I think the real lesson of 'Footloose' is you shouldn't condemn something because of one awful event," Majer said. "You should move forward, put your best foot forward."

Julie Clark, a sophomore of Norridge, plays Eleanor Dunbar.

"I like it a lot," Clark said, of the musical. "It's a lot of fun."

Of the Ridgewood High School theater community, Clark said, "I'm glad I joined the drama club last year. It's one of the best decisions I've ever made. It's a great theater."

Megan Straughn, a junior from Norridge, plays Betty Blast.

"It's a lot of fun; I love drama," Straughn said.
