Police: Armed robber stole more than $12,000 from Elmwood Park store

Police in Elmwood Park said they are continuing to investigate after a man stole more than $12,000 in an armed robbery this month at the Walgreens store on North Avenue. According to police, the robbery took place on Nov. 2. Police said a man brandishing a small silver handgun held up the Walgreens at 7200 W. North Ave. According to police, an employee said that at 10 p.m., he was in the store office counting money when he heard one knock and then a second, opened the door and saw a man with a gun in his hand. The employee told police the man took off a backpack and threw it on the floor, pointed the gun at him and motioned him toward the safe. According to police, the employee began opening the part of the safe opened by the keypad, and the man hit him on the left shoulder with his gun. The employee told police he removed the contents and placed them in the man's backpack and then opened a drawer and removed money and placed that into the backpack. The man then struck him in the back of his head with a gun and fled, according to police. Police said a video of the incident showed the man picking up the backpack, using his sleeve over his hand on the door handle and walking out of the office and the rear emergency door leading to the pharmacy drive-up window.
