River Grove's 'Vision Man' remembered for fun-loving spirit

Dr. Larry Jacobs, a dentist with Family Dentistry in River Grove, recalled how local eye doctor Randy Schultz would call Jacobs "Molar Man." Jacobs, in turn, would call Schultz "Vision Man." Schultz, the owner of Vision Man Optical Center on Grand Avenue in River Grove, lost his battle with pancreatic cancer on Aug. 15 at the age of 58. Jacobs said Schultz will be remembered for his sense of humor, big heart and fun-loving spirit. He said Schultz "helped out many organizations and people who needed it." The eye doctor's sister, Robin Schultz, said her brother "started getting sick in February." She said he died three months after learning he had cancer. "We received hundreds of phone calls from people throughout the community," Robin Schultz said. She said Randy Schultz grew up in Franklin Park and attended St. Maria Goretti School and East Leyden High School. After high school, he attended Triton College. "He became interested in being an optometrist in his early 20s," she said. "He had a girlfriend whose father was an eye doctor. They remained good friends throughout the years." Robin Schultz said her brother started making glasses at home and began to sell them at flea markets. She said their whole family would help him create the glasses as well as distribute them. She said he opened an office in Franklin Park, and then on Western Avenue and Devon.
