CONVENT — St. James Parish sheriff's deputies are still investigating why a man fatally shot his stepfather late Saturday morning in front of a Vacherie convenience store on La. 20, the Sheriff's Office said Monday.

Chief Deputy Col. Sid Berthelot said Monday that Rojae Olando Jackson Dumas has not provided a statement to investigators about the shooting at the Wag-A-Pac store.

"We are still working on establishing a motive," Berthelot said.

Judge Thomas Kliebert Jr., of the 23rd Judicial District, set Dumas' bail Monday at $500,000, Berthelot said.

Deputies later learned that Dumas, 26, 13154 Willow St., Vacherie, shot Jackson, also of Vacherie, Martin has said.

About two and a half hours after the shooting, family members encouraged Dumas to surrender and drove Dumas to a sheriff's substation to turn himself in. He was booked later into St. James parish jail in Convent on a count of second-degree murder, deputies said.
