During the past year, the song “Stand by Me” by Ben E. King brought Judith Durant to tears at least six times. It was the song she sang with her sister, Carol, when they were young.

“I don’t believe she ever brought harm to anyone,” she said, recalling her sister’s kind and quiet demeanor through life.

Carol Bartashy died in August 2016 at age 56. Her air-conditioning had not been working for over a year before she was found in her trailer on Aug. 3, noted her autopsy, prepared by the Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office.

The report, which ruled the cause of Carol’s death as complications of environmental heat exposure, noted that she previously went to a hospital for dehydration and other symptoms of heat exposure. Carol was a smoker and that fact, along with heart disease were listed as contributing causes of her death.

The news felt jarring for her family. They were expecting her for a fall visit on the East Coast later in the year. A 56-year-old, Judith said, “doesn’t die of heat exposure. It just doesn’t happen. But I guess it does happen.”

Carol grew up in Massachusetts. She lived on the West Coast as an adult, eventually moving to Arizona sometime in the 1990s. She was five years younger than Judith, who said the two saw life in very different ways. Carol led a simple existence, across the country from her family.

“She lived her own life very far away from us,” she said.

She remembers her sister as a sweet person, who returned to school in the mid-2000s for her associate’s degree and worked for customer service for Safeway grocery stores in the Valley.

“I never heard her say anything bad about anyone,” Judith said. “I don’t believe she ever brought harm to anyone.”
