Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency on Saturday as helmet-clad white supremacists brawled with counter-protestors in a Charlottesville park where officials plan to remove a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Bearing shields and chanting racist slogans, thousands of alt-right nationalists descended on Emancipation Park – formerly Lee Park – in downtown Charlottesville. Hundreds of counter-protestors were also there, and both sides hurled plastic bottles and sprayed each other with chemicals, according to reports. Some protestors could be seen throwing punches. At least one man was seen with blood running down his face. Police in riot gear set up barricades and ordered the protestors to disperse. There was no immediate word on arrests. Saturday’s rally comes after torch-carry white nationalists, yelling “white lives matter” and Nazi slogans, marched through the University of Virginia Friday night, punching counter-protestors and spraying them with chemicals.
