Letters: A suggestion on improving drainage

“I'm going to urge everyone who can do it to find one catch basin and clean it.”

— New Orleans City Councilman James Gray

They say be a good citizen. Don’t ask what New Orleans can do for you. Hug a storm drain.

As Hurricane Nate veered toward New Orleans, all I could think of was that big, sloppy "hug" a couple of neighbors and I recently had with our ever-clogged neighborhood drain. Seven contractor bags full of slop, to be exact. Seven bags that apparently were not keeping us from draining, as the water was once again pooled on the street during the next “rain event.”

With a turbine from the Coolidge Administration and pump logs kept handwritten, can I make a humble request of my city: an online portal to expedite the professional cleaning of a drain when the grunt work has already been done and proved useless? Not a 311 call — reminding us again we’re the westernmost city of Byzantium — but something simple and efficient.

That would be a sign of affection I could get used to giving and receiving.
