A decorated Marine officer who founded a billion-dollar mortgage company is exploring a run for governor in South Carolina.

John Warren of Greenville says his mission as the Palmetto State's top lawmaker would be to "end the sickening culture of corruption that infects our state government.

"Political insiders and career politicians have handed the keys to our state over to the lobbyists and special interest groups and forgotten about the people I swore an oath to protect. I am a former Marine Captain, successful businessman, and conservative outsider who is not beholden to anyone."

Warren, 38, is founder and CEO of Lima One Capital, a specialty mortgage finance company which is one of the nation's largest lenders for residential real estate investors and homebuilders.

He served four years on active duty as an infantry officer in the Marine Corps and in 2006 spent seven months conducting combat operations against insurgent forces in Ramadi, Iraq. While deployed, he was decorated for valor and heroic achievement, and he completed his tour as a captain.

"As a veteran who led over 300 combat missions, I can tell you that when I take on a mission, I always see it through," Warren said on his new website, Warren for Governor.

"And if I run for governor, my mission will be to clean up Columbia and end the big-government gravy train that has done nothing but line the pockets of political insiders at the expense of the people."

If he throws his hat in the ring, Warren would be the fifth GOP gubernatorial candidate, following Lt. Gov. Kevin Bryant, incumbent Gov. Henry McMaster, former Lt. Gov. Yancey McGill and Charleston attorney Catherine Templeton.

To weigh his chances, Warren has opened a war chest with $50,000 of his own money.

Warren, who earned a bachelor's degree from Washington and Lee University and a master's degree in business from New York University, lives in Greenville with his wife Courtney and son Stevie.
