One dead in early Sunday shooting on Parnell Drive; one arrested, Baton Rouge police say

One person was arrested in the Sunday morning fatal shooting on Parnell Drive, Baton Rouge police said.

Taher Toom, 53, will be booked into Tangipahoa Parish Jail on counts of second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon, police spokesman Sgt. Don Coppola Jr. said. Toom, 14055 Tricou Boulevard, Hammond, will later be transferred to East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

Zakaria Toom, 50, died in a shooting around 1:45 a.m. at a residence in the 12700 block of Parnell Drive, police said. 

Police believe the two are related, and investigators are working on determining the exact relationship, Coppola said.

Baton Rouge police and the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office collaborated in the arrest.

“Information provided by witnesses was crucial in this arrest,” Coppola said.

One person died in a shooting early Sunday morning on Parnell Drive, Baton Rouge police said.

Around 1:45 a.m., 50-year-old Zakaria Toom was found inside a residence in the 12700 block of Parnell Drive with apparent gunshot injuries, police spokesman Sgt. Don Coppola Jr. said in a news release. Toom, 16132 Haynes Drive, died at the scene.

No other details were immediately available.
