After a slow start, there’s a hint of optimism for Lane Kiffin in year one at Florida Atlantic. That seems like a perfect time for him to squeeze himself into the college football news cycle.

Kiffin’s Owls are 2-0 in Conference USA after besting Middle Tennessee and Old Dominion the past two weeks. After his old boss, Alabama czar Nick Saban, dropped a notable soundbite after the Crimson Tide’s win against Texas A&M — calling all of the positive press for his players “rat poison” — Kiffin saw an opening.

Responding to a tweet that said Florida Atlantic now has the best odds to win C-USA this season, Kiffin tweaked his former employer.

“Please stop media!!” Kiffin tweeted. “This is rat poison to our players!! #process #top10rushingoffensesinthecountry #bama #thefaU”

Florida Atlantic is actually No. 15 in the nation in rushing yards per game, though the Owls through the benefit of an extra game or two than some programs do have the 10th-most rushing yards. They lost three of their four non-conference games, beating only FCS’ Bethune Cookman, but have looked impressive against two C-USA teams that were expected to be pretty good this season. Middle Tennessee was missing its potential all-league quarterback, Brent Stockstill, but that doesn’t matter to a first-year coach trying to build up a program that’s been mostly an afterthought since it joined the FBS.

Kiffin’s Owls have this coming weekend off, but will face North Texas at home Oct. 21 in a matchup of the only 2-0 teams in conference play at this point.
