Southern's first-year coach Morris Scott is still searching for his first win. The Jaguars dropped their season opener 102-55 at Illinois on Friday, kicking off Southern's daunting non-conference schedule, which isn't expected to ease up at 7 p.m. Monday against Marshall at the Cam Henderson Center in Huntington, West Virginia. Southern's trip to Marshall will begin a tough week of multiple non-conference games against high-caliber opponents. The Jaguars will travel to Missouri State on Wednesday, to Duke on Friday and to North Carolina Central to finish the week Sunday. In Game 1, as Scott expected, senior forward Jared Sam carried a majority of Southern's offensive load. Sam paced Southern with 21 points and 11 rebounds, recording a double-double in the Jaguars' first game. Sam was the only Southern player to score in double figures. Southern shot 37.3 percent from the floor and made just two 3-pointers on 11 attempts. Illinois, which earned its first win under new coach Brad Underwood, scored 33 points via Southern's 22 turnovers and out-rebounded the Jaguars 42-26.  A limit on giveaways could keep Southern within striking distance Monday, as Thundering Herd coach Dan D'Antoni searches for his 50th career win....Read more
