LSU sophomore infielders Rankin Woley and Mason Templet have been granted release to transfer, LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri confirmed in a text message Monday.

"Both of these young men have decided to continue their baseball and academic careers elsewhere," Mainieri said. "We wish them nothing but the best."

Woley was suspended indefinitely this fall for a violation of team rules and did not participate in LSU's annual purple and gold world series.

Though he did not have a true defensive position, Woley's bat was expected to allow him to compete for playing time on the LSU infield. He appeared in 26 games as a freshman with eight starts and hit .267 with six extra-base hits in 45 at-bats.

A report from Perfect Game indicated Woley, an Atlanta native, is transferring to Chattahoochee Valley Community College in Alabama.

Templet, a St. Thomas More product, struggled in limited playing time as a freshman. He received six at-bats in five games, striking out five times.

The transfers put LSU at 34 players, one below the NCAA maximum of 35.

One of those 34, sophomore right-hander Eric Walker, will not play this season while he recovers from Tommy John surgery. Another, freshman right-hander Nick Storz, is expected to miss the first month of the season.

LSU begins workouts for the new season Jan. 10 and opens the season Feb. 16 against Notre Dame at Alex Box Stadium.
