A student at Glenda Dawson High School attempted to hang himself in a stairwell with a rope early Thursday morning, shortly before the start of the school day.

According to the Pearland Police Department, the boy was found by a teacher at about 6:30 a.m.

At least three teachers managed to save the young boy's life by lowering him from the rope he used to hang himself with, and then rendered first aid until medical staff arrived.

At least three teachers helped the student, said Pearland PD spokesman Jason Wells.

A new study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows suicide and self-harm numbers among teen girls is on the rise. According to the study, the number of ER visits among girls between ages 10 and 14 rose from 110 visits per 100,000 in 2009 to 318 visits per 100,000 in 2015. Older teenage girls had the highest ratio with 633 visits per 100,000 in 2015. The study also pointed out that the numbers are not reflective of the problem since the study on counted ER visits and not doctor's offices or unreported cases.

"Had it been a mere few more seconds, no telling what condition the boy would've been in," he said.
