Most soon-to-be teenagers become bored of their bedroom at a certain age. Because the latest trends for tween bedrooms are always changing, it can be difficult to know how to update your tween’s bedroom without breaking the bank. Luckily, there are a ton of quick-and-easy budget-friendly ways to make your tween’s bedroom more age-approriate and cure their boredom.

Add a coat of paint

Adding a quick coat of paint is an inexpensive way to make a room feel like new. Let your tween choose a solid paint cover, then use wall stencils or decals to decorate. Wall stencils are user-friendly even for a decorating novice, and can easily removed if your tween becomes tired of the design. To highlight the pattern of a wall stencil, try using muted or neutral colors.

For a more dramatic look, try creating an accent wall opposite the bed. Creating an accent wall is easier than it seems — most only require a gallon of paint and time set aside for painting. Allow your tween to choose an accent wall paint color with some supervision. The accent color should work well with the present color scheme of the room and shouldn’t be something they’ll grow out of in a month.

Add color and patterns

Incorporating different colors into your tween’s room is another way to alleviate their boredom and refresh the room. Try buying Christmas twinkle lights or fun pillows in dramatic colors. While warm colors like red and orange energize a space, cool colors like purple and blue are more calming. Let your tween choose the color scheme that best fits their personality and what they’re looking to get out of their room.

Patterns are ideal for adding energy to a room. Avoid incorporating too many different patterns in order to keep the room from looking busy. Pairing a wall print with a geometric area rug or throw pillow is a great way to keep the room looking fun, yet uniform. Remember, more colors will bring more energy to the room.

If you’re looking for a quicker, easier fix than painting, try buying your tween a new bed set. Even just a new comforter is perfect for refreshing a room’s identity and making the room feel new again. There are plenty of design ideas and bedding options online if you’re not sure where to start — this can also give help them some ideas and inspiration.

Invest in storage

Organizing your tween’s room will help keep clutter to a minimum as well as help them enjoy spending time in their room. Plastic baskets and bins are ideal for storing old school papers and knick knacks. Most department stores sell affordable shelving units and cabinets. A variety of storage options can also be found at your local thrift store.

Wicker baskets are a practical storage option and the neutral color will work with most room color schemes. For smaller rooms, shelves are favorable. For something more colorful, try different colored storage baskets that accent other colors used in the room.

Keeping the closet stocked with hangers will encourage them to keep their clothes hung up and off the floor. In addition, over-the-door organizers are perfect for storing shoes and accessories.

Updating your tween’s room doesn’t have to cost a fortune. There are an infinite number of ideas to incorporate into a bedroom update, so it’s important to consider what’s best for them. All in all, you should focus on tailoring the room to their interests, but also invest in long-term changes to you create a room they can grow into their teen years in, and not grow out of within a year.
